Seniors

"In old age they still produce fruit; they are always full of sap."

(Ps. 92.14)

As seniors, we make vital contributions to our Wildwood congregation and to the broader Ute Pass community.  As faithful living continues across the agespan, we may experience new limits, vulnerabilities, and losses, but we also experience new perspective, satisfactions, and wisdom.

As grandparents, we can be loving, indulgent, tender, patient, and generous.  We can help guide younger people in life without the heavy responsibilities of parenting.

As seniors, we steward.  We pass on our advice, our values, our standards, our experience, our strategic sense, and our wisdom.

In our seventies, the latest research shows, most seniors are still high in reasoning and verbal expression.  As longevity rises, centenarians are known for their high-protein and low-fat diets, their mental and spiritual vitality, their keen interest in current events, their optimism and their humor, and their knack for living their life as an adventure.

Most of us hope to remain functional, useful, and respected.  Crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper, card games, hobbies, and friendships help us keep our mental sharpness and our sense of aliveness.  If we care for others, continue to take risks, and take long daily walks or get other regular exercise, we are likely to maintain our sense of happiness, joy, and well-being.

Ideally, our elder years are about the pure pleasures of caring and being cared about.  Close, loving relationships keep our souls alive.  Continuing interesting activities are a source of passion, vitality, and even excitement and exhilaration.

Ideally, our elder years are a time of sublime spiritual meaning and illuminating insights, generous and selfless love, adaptability and sweetness of being, and serenity and grace.  When our life is also marked by an endowment, a legacy, or what Gail Sheehy calls “coalescence,” we answer with our words and actions:  What is the essence of ourselves that we most desire to leave behind?
